Students learning in a social context

This chapter explores the topic of learning in social contexts, with particular reference to early years. Learning in social contexts is an essential part of study in early years courses. For this to happen effectively, certain conditions are needed, such as fair access to study and respectful environments for learning. In order for early years students to grow into self-confident agents of change, tutors/facilitators should plan rich and varied social learning opportunities so that students feel safe to share their thinking, critique a range of approaches and articulate their beliefs to wider audiences. Such ambitious aims necessitate varied social learning opportunities founded on individual relationships of trust.
