ABSTRACT

This chapter is brief and looks at the conventional type of psychotropic drug treatment that is available for maternal mental illness. The purpose of the chapter is to give information about the type of medication and the statistics on usage, as well as some of the research on abnormalities that may occur with some forms of medication. When working with maternal mental illness it is highly likely that a woman may have been prescribed some form of psychotropic medication, and it can be helpful to know about some of the research that exists, the type of medication, the side effects on mother and fetus/infant and how we can support those women either with their medication or if they no longer wish to take their medication is they are finding that the benefits are heavily outweighed by the more negative effects the drugs have.
