ABSTRACT

This chapter explores the trauma of postpartum psychosis. Although a rare type of psychosis, it occurs in every 1–2 in 1,000 women. This type of psychosis is rarely talked about, even though it is extremely frightening and distressful for the woman and her family and can take a long time to come to terms with. The chapter looks at some of the hypotheses of causation, although there is still a lack of consensus on the cause. It gives some of the symptoms of postpartum psychosis and goes onto highlights the narratives in the limited qualitative research. The chapter ends with the possibility of using psychotherapy as a suitable treatment for the trauma caused by postpartum psychosis, post inpatient care. It also highlights the use of creative techniques as a way of working with this type of trauma.
