ABSTRACT

In my work I outline a new model of cemetery, drawing on the example of Novodevichy Cemetery in Moscow. Using the theoretical resources of cultural sociology I will show that the separation of the cemetery as a memorial space and as a tourist space is not limited to one of these models, excluding the rest. The necropolis itself acts as a memory space, which is implemented in several semantic registers that are determined by the physical characteristics of the cemetery and ambiguity of gravestones.
