ABSTRACT

This final chapter in this book summarises and concludes current knowledge and future research directions in tourism foreign direct investment (TFDI). It emphasises issues and aspects highlighted in the book chapters, as well as accentuates conclusions formulated by contributing authors. This chapter has two main sections focusing on Sections 2 and 3 of the book. The section Sustainable Tourism Foreign Direct Investment in Context raises three important issues that are, to date, underrepresented in the relevant literature; (1) the relationship between FDI and tourism both conceptually and practically; (2) theories and frameworks related to tourism FDI; (3) the importance of the inclusion of local voices for a greater understanding of TFDI impacts and its role in tourism development. The section Current Issues in Tourism Foreign Direct Investment highlights the empirical country case studies. The chapters encapsulated aim to demonstrate current knowledge on TFDI and seek to provide specialist perspectives on the state of the art of important aspects and issues within TFDI by studying them in specific case study locations. The key findings from the book chapters are reviewed, conclusions are derived as well as future research directions presented. Suggestions and recommendations are offered for local planners, destination and business managers to successfully manage tourism FDI.
