ABSTRACT

In this chapter, I describe my approach when working collaboratively with clients to facilitate a movement of creative energy that is initiated, developed, and completed through the “creative cycle”. I describe facilitating this movement by highlighting the use of the body, the visual arts, and metaphor within the person-to-person relationship and from a “dialogic” stance. This work can emerge and be explored most effectively in therapeutic relationships when there is a working alliance in place and the client is able and willing to engage collaboratively in the creative and metaphoric forms of expressive arts in psychotherapy. The use of visual arts media, metaphor, and the expressive experience of the body is the focus of this chapter, ending with reference to the use of the “retrospective review”.
