ABSTRACT

This chapter will trace the development of integrative arts psychotherapy in Britain, looking first at the vision of the founders of the Institute for Arts in Therapy and Education (IATE) and their aims in setting up the Institute. It will then explore the journey that was undertaken over the next 30 years, as the approach was developed and refined – from arranging the first workshops to share the power of the arts for transformation and change with the public, developing short courses, bringing speakers from across the world to the UK to share the most innovative thinking about the arts and therapy with our UK audience. The second section describes setting up an integrative arts psychotherapy training and having this approved by the United Kingdom Council for Psychotherapy, and later, by the Health Professions Council (now Health and Care Professions Council). The chapter concludes by describing the current programme and the integrative arts psychotherapy approach. How this is continuing to be developed will also be considered.
