ABSTRACT

This chapter provides an overview of a structural framework that can be used to develop an integrative approach to art psychotherapy practice, demonstrating some of the ways that the seven art forms might emerge or be used in an integrated and holistic way within this approach. The six-relationship framework can provide a solid foundation for teaching; feedback from trainees and graduates affirms its usefulness for practice. It helps therapists to consider their client/s creatively and imaginatively and prepare for the proposed shared journey in its fullness, by bringing together a relevant and wide-ranging amount of literature on theory, research, and practice to develop a holistic, coherent, and consistent approach to working. The framework supports the assessment of risk and a capacity to grade and pace clinical work. The approach can also be reviewed or developed collaboratively over time so that the work is relational, sensitive, and most useful for the client or group. An ongoing process of structured reflection using the framework can support the therapist and client to hold in mind the fullness of the therapeutic relationship, enabling them to be present and to focus on how the arts and imagination come to life in sessions.
