ABSTRACT

Within psychotherapy, often the client’s wish to be seen, accepted, and understood can run alongside the fear of “being found out” and exposed. Working somatically with the arts can support the process of growth within the co-created relational field between the therapist and the client. This chapter illustrates how the process of “hide and seek” presented itself in the therapeutic process and how the use of the body and the arts helped the process of discovery. It focuses on verbal and non-verbal communication, metaphor, emerging images, and the interchange between embodiment and externalisation, enabling insight and potential for change. This chapter uses a case study to illustrate how the process of “hide and seek” presented itself in the therapeutic process and how it can lead to a development of awareness and potential for change.
