ABSTRACT
Negotiating with the Schools: Achievements and Asymmetries addresses the families and students appreciation of the education the Shaker schools offered and how they navigated the racialized, asymmetric systems. Students’ capabilities and family's agency and investment of time shaped the negotiations with school authorities, which lead to students achieving a quality education in the face of the pervasiveness and normalcy of racism and the complex interplay of class and race.
