ABSTRACT

This chapter outlines the principal findings and recommendations of the various workshops that were set up for the conference. The workshop was designed to permit a relatively free discussion of a range of possible new approaches to understanding travel behaviour and developing forecasting models. The Equilibrium Modelling workshop concentrated on the interdependencies between the land-use system, the economic system and the transport system. The Consumer Segmentation workshop began by defining segmentation as being rather loosely any relevant classification for transport modelling or planning that aids in the understanding and prediction of travel behaviour. The workshop made one recommendation for further research, namely the application of disaggregate models to long-run policy concerns, particularly emphasising interactions with land use. It is quite clear that continued research into travel-forecasting procedures without interaction with the decision-makers must condemn that research to a relatively sterile product.
