ABSTRACT

Approaches to understanding traveller behaviour have been proposed which pay particular attention to the derived nature of travel. This workshop should appraise the present state of knowledge on new approaches and propose a course of action for future research and application of those approaches with promise. The remainder of the chapter is devoted to an exploration of key policy applications, and to suggestions of the possibilities of more rigorous theoretical and empirical research. The recommendations for future research directions are summarised briefly; the remainder of the report is then devoted to suggestions as to how these recommendations might be fulfilled. Quite clearly the modelling of the formation of space and time constraints and their relation to travel could be a rewarding direction for future research. This report justifies the use of the human activity framework for modelling urban travel demand.
