ABSTRACT

This chapter describes a number of educational practices that meet the contemporary demands of innovation, action, and collaboration within a traditional educational system/institution. It introduces educational practices that disrupt the tradition while simultaneously meeting the demands of that tradition. The chapter describes how dialogic and collaborative practices can be used within a traditional educational system. Reflecting on the excitement expressed by young children when they first attend school, it is disturbing to note how quickly that excitement disappears. The chapter discusses some educational practices that are designed to re-humanize institutional learning, emphasizing collaboration as a way to enhance learning while meeting the needs of the 21st century – needs that are very different from those met by our tradition of education borne in the Industrial Age.
