ABSTRACT

Immersive block placements have long been a feature of work-integrated learning (WIL) in higher education curricula. This chapter explores this type of placement which is often a requirement in professional programs. The involvement and influence of accreditation or regulatory bodies on WIL is briefly described, followed by a discussion on relevant learning and teaching approaches in this type of WIL. Several aspects of WIL, including sustainability, roles and relationships, assessment, and curriculum development, illustrate contemporary challenges for institutions, host organizations, and students. Next, a case study from the nursing context in New Zealand provides an example of effective immersive block placement that can be transferred across discipline areas. Finally, recommendations for future developments are outlined that can strengthen current practice and enhance student readiness for their professional career.
