ABSTRACT

The purpose of this chapter is to provide special education researchers with an introduction to mixed methods research. Mixed methods research involves the combining or mixing of qualitative and quantitative research within a study. While other disciplines (e.g., medicine, school psychology, criminology) have embraced mixed methodologies, such approaches have been underutilized in special education research. Our emphasis is on salient mixed methods study characteristics that can be used in special education research to address the complex needs of students with disabilities. An overview of mixed methods is provided. We discuss how mixed methods can be integrated into a study from conceptualization through publication. Information is provided on how to plan, implement, interpret, and disseminate mixed methods research. Additional mixed methods resources are provided.
