ABSTRACT

This chapter briefly reviews the history of “giftedness” and how the field of gifted education evolved. We use Bronfenbrenner’s Bioecological Model to examine the current state of the field, looking at how individual gifts and talents develop across time within the greater environmental context and examining the intersectionality of proximal processes. We specifically explore impacts of systemic racism and institutional/individual bias on gifted students who are culturally (i.e. racial, ethnic, and linguistic) different, economically disadvantaged, and/or who have disabilities.
