ABSTRACT

Single-case research (SCR) is an ideal approach for measuring the behavior change of individuals and allows for the assessment and modification of individualized interventions. In this chapter, we provide an overview of the contemporary use of SCR in special education. We discuss single-case design types and how to select the appropriate design based on research questions and describe how SCR is particularly well-suited for identifying evidence-based practices in special education, including culturally responsive practices. Also, although high-quality SCR has a long history in special education, research standards have evolved over time. We provide an overview and discussion of contemporary design standards and analysis procedures with a focus on advancing the field. The differentiation between quality and rigor and functional relations are delineated.
