ABSTRACT

This chapter introduces the concept of community sports coaching and provide an exploration of the coach’s role when coaching populous groups. Coaches have to adapt their planning, approach and practice to meet the needs of their participants, where appropriate. Good coaching connects with people, recognising their needs and supporting them to do something that they may possibly find difficult to achieve themselves. Community sport is habitually considered to emulate a society that can recognise the fundamental importance of people understanding the underlying principles of their culture. Community coaching can be a strong mechanism that recognises and responds to individuals and groups across the societal spectrum. The Coaching Plan for England is intended to generate more of these roles and to make it easier for people to perform them. The Coach Mate Connectors programme invited 30 coaches to be involved in the scheme from the pilot in West Yorkshire and the Midlands of England.
