ABSTRACT

The Mizo Peace Accord, as the author see it, brought out two important facts: there has to be sincerity of purpose, and a clear channel of communication between the parties involved and there has to be a spirit of sacrifice. The hardcore militants the United Liberation Front of Assam fought for twenty seven years for the liberation of Assam. It is said that more than ten thousand young boys were killed and thirty thousand young boys were wounded, besides thousands of civilians who lost their lives. After the incident in Dhemaji on 15 August 2004, the author decided to appeal to the Honorable Prime Minister of India for restoration of peace in Assam, and requested him to invite the militants for peace-talks. Democracy can have no prejudice; the colour of one’s skin, one’s social standing or one’s material wealth has no meaning in the democratic spirit.
