ABSTRACT

This chapter seeks to delineate the political history of medieval Assam, (AD 1228–1826) based on all available sources, documentary and otherwise. The Ahom kingdom dominated this period. The significance of this period of the study lies in the fact that it was during this period the state of “Asam” and its society were formed to be identified subsequently as the state of Assam and the Assamese society. Thus, the Ahoms facilitated the evolution of a new nationality and culture by bringing together various ethnic groups under one administration, thereby giving a political unity and economic stability to the people of this region.
