ABSTRACT

This chapter presents a case study on the monetary valuation of ecosystem damage due to pollution from textile industry in the Noyyal river basin in the Tiruppur area in Tamil Nadu, a state situated in the southern part of India. Information related to industrial growth in Tiruppur and its ecological impacts were gathered from studies conducted by the State Pollution Control Board, other government departments and from scientific studies carried out by independent researchers. The damage cost estimation on the drinking water sector covered the entire Tiruppur municipal area and villages affected by pollution. The Noyyal river is a tributary of the Cauvery, a major interstate river which passes through the states of Karnataka and Tamil Nadu and enters the Bay of Bengal. Identification and prediction of impacts on environment and natural conditions, quantification of direct and indirect impacts and monetisation of these impacts are the analytical steps in damage assessment.
