ABSTRACT

The origins of the European Bureau of Adult Education lie in the ferment of opinion just after the Second World War. Many Europeans felt an almost desperate need to build up contacts and to open channels of communication through which, it was hoped, a more closely knit Europe would develop. Like many voluntary, non-governmental organizations, the bureau has been dependent on the work and commitment of a relatively small group of individuals. Italy, Spain, Portugal, and Cyprus have recently come into membership and the bureau continues to do much both to facilitate contacts between their agencies and to stimulate general co-operation between north and south. Some of the declared objectives of the bureau are ‘to act as an information centre’, ‘to make available publications in the field of adult education’ and ‘to make available documentation related to all its aims and objectives’.
