ABSTRACT

The Unesco World Conference on Adult Education held in Montreal in 1960 brought together leading adult educators from various parts of the world. The Unesco regional seminar on the Role of Universities and Schools in Adult Education was held at the University of Sydney, Australia, towards the end of January 1964. Several events that took place in 1967 greatly influenced the development of adult education in the Asian-South Pacific region. In spite of the growing realization among Asian countries of its crucial importance, adult education was restricted to a marginal position in regard to the national education system. In subsequent years until 1967, the Asian-South Pacific Bureau of Adult Education (ASPBAE) executive had been very active in the promotion of adult education in the Asian-South Pacific region. Under the present leadership of Wijetunga, the bureau’s activities have picked up momentum and programmes for 1987 are being implemented according to schedule.
