ABSTRACT

The Caribbean area consists of the archipelago of islands stretching from the Bahamas in the north to Trinidad and Tobago in the south; the mainland countries of Guyana, Suriname, and Guyane on the South American continent; Belize in Central America; and Curacao and Aruba off the northern coast of South America. Adult education is not a new activity in the Caribbean. The Caribbean Regional Council for Adult Education elected a new executive at its last general assembly in April 1986. Attempts were made during the late colonial period to provide literacy classes for adults. Adult education is no exception to the rule, for those adults who most need education have been largely neglected — they are the forgotten people. Thus the major task of adult education during the Second Development Decade of the United Nations is to seek out and serve those forgotten people.
