ABSTRACT

Today the International Council for Adult Education (ICAE) functions as an international non-governmental organization, a voluntary and co-operative partnership of people and organizations working together for the education of adults for responsible, human-centred social and economic development. A special characteristic of the ICAE is its regional and national adult education association membership. It is an international organization that provides support to member organizations and networks of activists rather than to individuals. One of the goals of the council, upon its creation, was to provide a voice for the adult education movement within the international inter-governmental systems. The executive is responsible for implementation of the policies of the ICAE and the monitoring of programmes and finances of the organization. Programme priorities are set and monitored by the Programme Advisory Committee which reports to the executive and works directly with the president, the secretary-general, and the programme officers in the secretariat.
