ABSTRACT

This chapter is concerned with certain of the means for developing educational links and networks in the Commonwealth. Some of these are formal, some are non-formal in nature, and the balance between these is changing. Educational co-operation has become important in the deliberations of the various governments that make up the Commonwealth. It features more frequently in discussions as defence and economic and political matters have become less prominent, and it is seen as one of the major means of strengthening Commonwealth bonds and of influencing other nations. The main means of inter-governmental co-operation in the Commonwealth are the biennial meetings of the Heads of Government and the regular meetings of Commonwealth Ministers. The primary aim of the foundation is to strengthen the bonds between the Commonwealth countries; its areas of interest include the arts and culture as well as professional education and training. The largest of the Foundation’s programmes relates to the establishment or support of Commonwealth Professional Associations.
