ABSTRACT

This introductory chapter of India Higher Education Report 2020 offers a detailed snapshot of various dimensions of graduate employment and employability. It gives an overview of employment and the unemployment situation of the educated youth in India and the emerging concerns of employability skill gaps in them. The arguments of jobless growth are discussed in an initial section, followed by the trends and changes in employment, unemployment, and occupational structure of youth across various levels of education. Issues of employability skill gaps in higher education and transition towards market responsive skill-based higher education are highlighted as part of policy changes. The chapter ends with a brief summary of IHER 2020.
