ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the broad landscape of skill development and its relevance in the dynamic economy, and it considers the Indian and the global scenarios. It explores the convergence of knowledge-based and skill-based curricula and looks at various initiatives taken by the Government of India, such as intended targets, intended beneficiaries, budgetary support, and so on. The chapter proposes a dynamic approach to the introduction of demand-based skill development courses along with general courses which have a broader impact and allow a higher mobility between different sectors. It insists upon the need for convergence of efforts of various entities such as the Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship, UGC, Sector Skill Councils, and concerned universities along with new digital methods to track the progress of the workforce.
