ABSTRACT

This chapter describes various modes of informal learning in light of the predominance of the informal sector in India’s economic life and the rising trend of increasing numbers of graduates entering the informal sector due to limited employment opportunities in the formal sector. The chapter highlights that most informal-sector workers who possess skills have acquired them either through non-formal training or traditional education/informal training. It describes different informal apprenticeships models as an important source of skills formation, particularly in Africa, South Asia, and developed countries. The chapter then traces the historical evolution, theoretical premise, and the prevalent major forms of informal skill formation in India.
