ABSTRACT
Scholars of neoliberalism have focused largely on the Chicago school of economics, thereby missing the stream of thought that is transforming the world now. This chapter tells the story of the Virginia school of political economy founded by James McGill Buchanan, a Nobel Prize-winning economist whose ideas have been weaponized by right-wing billionaires to implement a corporate libertarian agenda with little popular support. The strategy informed by Virginia school ideas is being applied on every continent through the over 400 affiliates of the Atlas Network, which provides US funding and counsel on how to shackle democracy around the globe.
