ABSTRACT

The chapter aims to investigate the modes of radical democracy, law and citizenship in the Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria (AANES) commonly known as Rojava. It focuses mainly on the legal texts and practices that tend to decentralize hierarchical sovereignty and lead towards the self-government of stateless citizens. Using a gendered perspective, the chapter examines the new modes in which radical democracy is embodied in AANES and discusses to what extent this experience contributes to or challenges the conceptual and legal foundations of democracy.
