ABSTRACT

Dominic Hurst, in this chapter, explores concepts of practice in dentistry and suggests that performed practices are those, guided by our mindlines, in which we interact, moment to moment, with people and things. Using a variety of techniques to meet the challenges of analysing videos taken in the dental surgery, his work has developed into an innovative approach to exploring practice. The method might enable us to find new ways to understand in precise detail how social and material interactions develop in an encounter with a patient, pointing to insights that will help health professionals learn how to practise better.
