ABSTRACT

This chapter presents Marianne Brattgjerd’s exploration of the thinking behind nurses’ practice when they are using a standardised instrument, the Liverpool Care Pathway. The pathway has been controversial but is still widely used in many countries. Drawing on well-established ancient and modern philosophical approaches, she shows how important it is to ensure that nurses do not simply stick rigidly to the pathway as a standardised instrument. They can and do, however, work successfully with it in ways that ensure that their practices remain flexible, individualised, and are instilled with due thought and kindness.
