ABSTRACT

This chapter reconstructs historically and systematically Bildung as a heterogeneous concept with many meanings, due to the fact that it is part of a rich educational and philosophical tradition. Bildung theories relate differently to technology. The historical analysis shows that Bildung and education have always been developed out of and respond to specific media ecologies. If we want to think through Bildung and education today, we must also think through the media ecology that includes digital media and how Bildung can be rethought in this environment.
