ABSTRACT

An attractive wooden box stores sensory materials like soft rag dolls, glittering bowls, small boxes with odorous spices and many other inspiring things. The materials have been developed and compiled in cooperation with an institution for people with profound intellectual and multiple disabilities (PIMD) in Heisbergrucken, Germany. The story box contains a CD with appropriate music and sounds that have been specifically composed and recorded for each multisensory story by Hans Steinmeier, composer, arranger and director of the North-Rhine Westphalian Federal Police Orchestra, and his co-musicians. The concept of multisensory storytelling combines elements of the storytelling method with the old tradition of narrating fairy tales. It systematically explores fairy tales, myths and legends from the German heritage – and those of other countries too. Fairy tales originate from a time when only a few people were able to read and very few possessed books.
