ABSTRACT

This chapter provides an introduction to psychosis, including the aetiology of psychosis and the development of the hearing voices movement. It includes a brief explanation of the setting, and explanations of the roles and skills that a psychologist in a secondary care community psychosis team would be expected to manage. The challenges of the role, considerations of how to manage these and what can help are also explored. Such challenges include how to maintain integrity and professional identity, management of boundaries and expectations, and adaptations to the therapeutic frame with this client group. Considerations regarding the importance of the therapeutic relationship alongside formulation and progress within therapy are also included. The chapter contains personal reflections of working as a psychologist with this client group, with some case examples, alongside reflections from service users about their experiences of having psychological therapy or being part of a hearing voices group.
