ABSTRACT

The Occupational Health Service within an NHS Trust aims to promote and maintain health and prevent accidents and ill health caused at work in line with the right of employees under the Human Rights Act (1998). Healthy working and wellbeing can raise staff morale, increasing the effectiveness of the organisation and reducing staff absence. The role of a counselling psychologist within this context has been explored. Counselling psychologists work as part of diverse, multi-disciplinary teams and demonstrate competency working within a recognised therapeutic framework appropriate for time-limited, focused interventions. Counselling psychology philosophy within this context has been considered. The chapter looks at individual therapy, clinical supervision, staff training, service development and clinical audit, all important areas of responsibility for a counselling psychologist within Occupational Health. Ability to work within professional ethics and trust policies, equal opportunities and Occupational Health and Safety issues is imperative for the counselling psychologist in this challenging yet highly rewarding position.
