ABSTRACT

As counselling psychologists, we can be called upon to give evidence in court as a professional witness and expert witness. Professional witnesses are responsible to the court in the same way that an independent expert witness is (BPS, 2016). With this in mind, this chapter focuses on the structure, process and formality of court proceedings, and the counselling psychologist’s role within it. It explores how counselling psychologists assist the court in understanding the social and human factors that can result in state intervention, with the aim of reducing the stigma and shame experienced by vulnerable people moving through an adversarial process. With practical tips and advice, the chapter aims to share the author’s personal experience of the court process and the importance of holding on to the core values that underpin our work as counselling psychologists.
