ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on the potential career benefits of working in independent private practice (referred to throughout as ‘private practice’) as part of a portfolio career. It includes the development of a business idea and reflections on incorporating the ‘businessperson’ into our counselling psychology identity. Considerations around the therapeutic setting and the challenges have been included, in addition to legal and ethical considerations. Based on our clinical and business experience, we further highlight the importance of building and maintaining networking connections with colleagues, marketing consistently and appropriately, and having proper regard for self-care, resilience and self-awareness.
