ABSTRACT

This chapter provides an overview of the core issues related to working as a counselling psychologist with children and adolescents. It starts by highlighting the current context in which such services have been developed and reflects upon the different settings in which individuals may work (e.g. within education or health, or online). Following on from this, the chapter outlines how services, and therapy itself, might be tailored for these age groups. It briefly reflects upon different modes of delivery and considers the nature of the child-adult therapeutic relationship. To end, the chapter outlines some of the additional activities that counselling psychologists might engage in when working with children and adolescents. These include service management tasks and being involved in research and training.
