ABSTRACT

This chapter explores the contexts in which counselling psychologists work with various neurological client groups. These include NHS neuropsychological services, stroke services, rehabilitation settings, services for older people and charities. It briefly reviews the specialist knowledge and skills required for working in such settings, including knowledge of neuropsychology, brain anatomy and physiology, the nature of neurological conditions and their impact plus principles of intervention and rehabilitation with such groups. Neuropsychological assessment is an important part of the role in such settings. Key tests and principles are outlined, and suggestions made as to how counselling psychologists can develop their knowledge and practice in this area. Recent developments which allow counselling psychologists to train into this field are described.
