ABSTRACT

In recent years, Bangladesh has experienced a boom in infrastructure development in key sectors – for example, roads/highways, bridges, rail, energy, flood control, power, ports and urban development – contributing to economic growth and social transformation in terms of new employment opportunities and significant reduction in poverty in the rural areas. However, the growth and development had a cost as millions were displaced from their land, homes and communities. This chapter provides a review of the development and displacement scenario, and critically examines the key features of the new land law ARIPA 2017 and Resettlement Guidelines (2018) designed to end the “double standard” practiced so long and for better management of development-forced displacement and resettlement in Bangladesh.
