ABSTRACT

Internationalization is a broad concept, with many rationales, strategies, approaches, and interpretations. Josef A. Mestenhauser’s work has been influential in the debate on internationalization in (higher) education, but it has been argued that his ideas and reality were not always aligned. In this chapter, Hans de Wit will consider the evolution of internationalization policies and practices over the past 50 years, with reference to the work of Mestenhauser, and how they will look in the future. Internationalization as an elitist and exclusive policy is heavily debated, but de Wit reflects on whether that will come to an end and whether a revival in inclusivity and service to society will be possible.
