ABSTRACT

As a pioneering cross-cultural counseling psychologist and former NAFSA: Association of International Educators president, Thomas focuses here on Josef A. Mestenhauser’s role in professionalizing the workforce. He began with his own staff, motivating her and others to develop international dimensions in traditional disciplines to support their work with international students and scholars. Perhaps the most visible legacy of Mestenhauser can be seen in NAFSA, the largest professional organization in the field. As immediate past president in 2001, Thomas turned to him as a sounding board as she provided national leadership to international students and scholars in the wake of 9/11.
