ABSTRACT

Italian performer and author Giuliana Musso’s work Sexmachine aims to unveil and interrogate the prevailing narrative surrounding sexuality within Italian society. How can we challenge existing stereotypes about sex? Is sex primarily linked to power dynamics? From a female perspective, Giuliana Musso approaches the topic of sex in the context of prostitution, shedding light on the underlying tensions surrounding male-female relationships, stereotypical representations of women, the intersection of sex and capitalism, and the intricate relationship between sex and prostitution. Drawing inspiration from the rich Italian tradition of theater, Giuliana Musso, in her solo performance, lends voice to and portrays various characters, primarily men, with the intention of reversing perspectives and gaining insight into how men experience sexuality. What motivates their desires? This performance underscores the contradictions that permeate Italian society, torn between the ideals of emancipation and the persistence of patriarchal values.
