ABSTRACT

Madhya Pradesh elections outcome has traditionally followed the national trend and the Lok Sabha elections 2019 were no exceptions. This election which witnessed the highest voter turnout also registered widest victory margin and biggest seat tally in favour of the BJP. The verdict was a clear reaffirmation of the faith in the Central government. This explains the rout of the Congress in the state. The vote in the assembly election was for a change of guard at the state level. The vote this time was an unequivocal endorsement of the claims of the BJP for another term in office at the centre. The extraordinary performance of the BJP was based on the solid platform created by ‘Modi Magic’. It was a completely presidential form of an election where the opposition was very feeble and fragmented to head-on with the charisma, oratory, analogy, and narrative of Modi. What did not help the Congress also was its own organisational weaknesses which were further accentuated by intense turf war for supremacy among the Congress sub-regional satraps like Scindia, Dingvijay Singh, and Kamal Nath.
