ABSTRACT
This chapter proposes that the Coordinate Structure Constraint and the Across-the-Board exceptions to this constraint follow from a parallel structures model of coordination using the notion of the union of phrase markers. Asymmetries in Across-the-Board extraction are discussed in detail, as well as extraction in Palauan and Spanish. Gapping is also analyzed here by means of the union of phrase markers. This approach requires a linearization process, and this process accounts for many of the peculiar properties of Gapping, both within clauses and within noun phrases. Forward and backward Gapping are discussed, as are properties of Gapping in Chinese and in verb-final languages like Japanese and Korean.
