ABSTRACT

In this chapter, we propose the application of Basil Bernstein's work to understanding and developing quality sport coach education and development. In adopting some of his concepts, we discuss the opportunities and challenges in the evolving professionalisation of coach education and development. Bernstein's concepts of curriculum, pedagogy, and assessment, which he referred to as ‘three message systems,’ are presented as a way to identify valid knowledge, its transmission, and effective assessment. Indeed, the three message systems can be used to shape a holistic framework for coach education and development. We propose the centrality of learning and learners within the notion of ‘quality’ in coach education and development. In this chapter, we also provide some insight into the subsequent chapters in this section of the Handbook, including a more detailed understanding of Bernstein's concepts followed by some case studies from various sports and jurisdictions.
