ABSTRACT

The purpose of this chapter is to review coach education practices in North America (primarily Canada) and Europe (Russia and Finland). It begins with Canada, known as the birthplace of ice hockey, and offers an overview of formal and informal coach development practices employed by national sports governing bodies. It also offers insight into ice hockey coach development in the United States. The second section of the chapter discusses the factors that shaped formal coach education practices in Russia. The third section provides an overview of coach development in Finland. Finally, lessons and suggestions for future coach education initiatives are presented.
