ABSTRACT

We are witnessing a shift in sporting trends that challenge norms and traditions in relation to not only what we deem ‘sports’ to be, but also why and how participants engage in these activities. Two examples of these trends are in relation to the growth of action sports and esports on a global scale. Attributable to these changes is how (professional) athletes learn and develop. As such, in this chapter, we take an ecological approach to sharing insights into the learning (environments) of action sports and esports athletes, and showcase their unique differences from more traditional sports. We offer thought-provoking considerations regarding a predominantly autonomy-supportive, peer-learning environment and acknowledge the role of the coach as facilitator of these environments promoting ongoing reflection, problem-solving and independence.
